Kathmandu Handmade was launched to bring local artisans belonging to different parts of the Kathmandu valley to a united platform. Handicrafts have always played a crucial part in upholding our tradition, culture, heritage and art. The handicraft industry is a massive contributor to Nepal’s GDP not only in the present but since ancient times. The medieval
history of Nepal also states that handicrafts were exported from the Kathmandu valley to Tibet in the 12th Century. Currently, they are exported majorly to the United States and some parts of Europe and Asia-Pacific. However, handicrafts are not just a big part of our commerce but also the exemplars of evergreen tradition and culture which has been passed from generation to generation. It has inspired us to build a pathway for Nepalese handicrafts to reach the local market. And through this collaboration, we aspire to boost the spirit of our local craftsmen and assist in digitizing the handicrafts industry of Nepal.
Our Philosophy
The project commenced to encourage and invoke story-telling practices through the medium of art. We wish to lend a helping hand to portray our handicrafts as the bearers of stories and not just ‘sales’ items. And, we aim to bring in commercial benefits for the artisans and help them lead their walk of life.
Our Artisans
Each and every product in Kathmandu Handmade comes directly from the hands of local Nepali artists. Their arts have played a huge role in preserving our identity. So, we bring forward their stories and they help us in creating ours. We empower them and they empower us.
